I’m a freelance journalist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In the last five years I’ve reported on topics ranging from environmental issues to state politics. Whether I cover abandoned mine pits on the Iron Range or the court cases of anti-RNC protesters, I try to approach my work in a way that fulfills journalism’s mission to serve the public’s interest.
I’m currently an online reporter for Minnesota Public Radio. I was a reporter and editor for the non-profit Minnesota Independent until the site’s closure in November 2011. I also covered nine neighborhoods of Minneapolis as editor of Southwest Minneapolis Patch for one year, served as the legislative correspondent for American Consolidated Media newspapers in northeast Minnesota for two years and was a Projects Reporter for the Minnesota Daily. I’ve written freelance pieces for a number of local news venues, and my articles have been picked up or re-blogged by Politico, Mother Jones and the Huffington Post, among others.
As a graduate of the University of Minnesota journalism program, I’m trained in print, online and broadcast journalism. I also gained experience with radio broadcasting as an intern at the KFAI news department. Before that, I was involved with a community journalism project that published submissions on local art, music and politics. I’ve also kept abreast of online publishing as the editor of a local news blog at www.rhubarbarism.com.
